LAVA: digital origami emergency shelter

Sydney-based practice LAVA has created 'digital origami emergency shelter', a conceptual prototype for the emergency shelter exhibition on display now in sydney, australia through september 3, 2011. a solution for replacement housing during natural disasters, the exterior's geometric appearance, derived from a water molecule, is intended to be stacked with other modules generating an interconnected village.
Currently a small scale representation of the framework, the full size structure is capable of comfortably housing two adults and one child for daily activities including eating, reading and sleeping.
This unit's striated elevation is constructed with layered sheets of plywood cut with a CNC machine and spaced at even vertical intervals. Contrasting the enclosure's planar surfaces, the undulating interior reveals ledges to be used as a chair or bed when needed. During a disaster situation, the pieces may be flat-packed and shipped or dropped to individuals via helicopter to be assembled on-site.
Readily available materials including wood, cardboard, and newspaper may be substituted and used with the same stacking method for speedy installation.
At night, battery or solar operated LED lights brighten the volume while transforming the object into an illuminated lantern, proving a sign of hope to victims.

Este trabajo final de Diseño Arquitectónico de Interiores de la Facultad Bakalo y la Universidad de Derby desarrollado en el año 2007, trata la problemática de desarrollar pequeñas residencias móviles y/o refugios, que puedan ser prefabricados y fácilmente instalados en la montaña o en la playa. MICRO COMPACT HOME
The micro compact home [m-ch] is a lightweight compact dwelling for one or two people. Its compact dimensions of 2.6m cube adapt it to a variety of sites and circumstances, and its functioning spaces of sleeping, working / dining, cooking and hygiene make it suitable for everyday use.
Informed by aviation and automotive design and manufactured at the micro compact home production centre in Austria, the m-ch can be delivered throughout Europe with project individual graphics and interior finishes.
The product was first launched in Munich in November 2005 with the development of a case study village sponsored by O2 Germany, which is currently occupied by students of TU Munich

MIDOMO: PURIFICADOR DE AGUA RODANTE
Midomo is a water purifier for the developing world. We all know that access to clean water remains a global problem. What perhaps is unclear, is the extent of this problem in relation to the simplicity of thesolution.
Many millions of women and children still spend up to 10 hours per day collecting potentially harmful water, resulting in 10,000 deaths each day and making something as simple as having a drink more life-threatening than all forms of violence and war.

Midomo can begin to change this. Using an internal filter system, powered by the rotation of the wheels, Midomo transforms harmful water to drinkable water on-the-go.
To use, simply roll your Midomo to the nearest water source, fill it’s 50 litre tank, and roll it home. Once home, the water drawn from the unit is safe to drink by World Health Organisation standards. Midomo enables vulnerable individuals to independently access safe water by removing reliance on aid workers, engineers, scarce energy resources or an established infrastructure.
